About the speaker: Mrs. Priti Patkar is a social worker and a human rights activist. She is the Founder and Executive Secretary of Prerana Anti-Trafficking, Mumbai, an organization that works to protect the potential and actual women and child victims of human trafficking and other forms of violence. They also provide comprehensive path-breaking services to uphold their rights, create dignified options for life and lead major advocacy efforts to strengthen the
response of the state and the civil society to combat violence against women and children including trafficking with a sustainable, rights-based, development oriented, and participatory approach. Mrs. Patkar graduated from Nirmala Niketan College and obtained her Master’s from TISS, Mumbai. In 1986, she and her husband, Dr. Pravin Patkar, began their work and brought Prerana into being. She started Asia’s first Night Care Centre which is a space created to ensure the safety and development of children living in the red-light areas. This program was initiated as a response to the needs of mothers in the sex trade to keep their children safe during the night. The organization is also involved in the training and sensitization of various stakeholders including police officers, prosecutors, judicial officers, media representatives etc.

Mrs. Patkar was also appointed to the Central Advisory Committee to Combat Trafficking of women and children from commercial sexual exploitation. In 2020, Mrs. Patkar was awarded the Diane von Furstenberg award for her contribution to ending trafficking among women and children. She received the award along with Late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Iman Saskia, and Niño de Rivera. She is also the recipient of the Ashoka Fellowship and has also been awarded the Vital Voices Global Leadership Award in 2014. She also received the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2015 from the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development. In 2021, she was appointed as a member of the National Legal Services Authority. She also contributed to the putting together of the first network of anti-trafficking organizations, and the first comprehensive national programme for AIDS affected children, which was lauded as one of the world’s seven best interventions for working with AIDS-affected persons by an American University.
